I have become deeply disturbed and concerned about the problem of poaching. Every day I see new stories of Elephants and Rhino being slaughtered for their tusk. Will we loose some of the greatest of animals who walk our earth because of greed and ignorance? The David Sheldrick Trust based in Kenya is doing a phenomenal job of rescuing baby Elephants and Rhinos… most of them have been orphaned from the effects of poaching, some of them have fallen into man made wells and the mother, not having any way of getting her baby out must continue with the heard… leaving her baby alone. The stress this puts on the mother and baby is tremendous… The David Sheldrick trust has educated me in many ways… but more than anything, they've helped me to better understand the nature of Elephants and Rhinos. For example, I never knew that baby elephants can become so stressed that they can die… or that they can become attached to a person and depend on them as they would their mother, and if that person were to disappear, the stress and grief of that person's leaving could cause that baby elephant to die of grief. If you'd like to read some of the stories of the baby elephants rescued, check out their site and if you are in a position to assist, you can sponsor a baby elephant or rhino. http://www.sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/
I recently read the book 'Elephant Whisperer by Lawrence Anthony. What a powerful book… I could not put it down. Here is an article about this amazing man…
I highly recommend his book if you are interested in The African bush and the plight to save wildlife… especially the Elephants and Rhinos.
The Meah Foundation will be doing work in the near future to assist with the cause and awareness campaign for Elephants, Rhinos and poaching… please stay in touch as in the next few months, we will share the stories and offer story bracelets for some of the orphans.
Thanks for reading,
